The RMS Titanic is the ultimate symbol of the Gilded Era. It represents the pinnacle of prosperity, confidence, and hospitality. The competitive transatlantic steamship industry witnessed significant advancements in vessel design, size, and speed.
The White Star Line, a leading company, focused on size and elegance rather than pure speed. In 1907, White Star Line executives J. Bruce Ismay and Lord James Pirrie, a partner of Harland & Wolff (the shipbuilding company of White Star Line since 1869), conceived three steamships. The Titanic was intended to set a new standard for comfort, luxury, and safety.
The first two ships were named Olympic and Titanic, with the latter name chosen by Ismay to convey a sense of immense size and strength.
