The Japanese company Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) launched Crystal Cruise in Los Angeles in 1988. Founded in 1885, NYK is now the largest shipping company in Japan. After World War II, they gradually discontinued passenger services to focus on freight ships. They re-entered the passenger ship market in 1988 with the order of Crystal Harmony. Harmony has 8 passenger decks, 2 swimming pools, 8 bars, a casino, a fitness center, a 277-seat theater, 461 exterior cabins (260 with awnings), 19 interior cabins, and can accommodate up to 940 passengers. Harmony primarily operates on routes from San Francisco to Alaska, Los Angeles to Mexico, and between Hong Kong and Beijing. It also occasionally operates on global routes and Nordic cruises between Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Ireland, and the UK. In 2006, the ship was transferred to NYK and renamed Asuka 11. It is likely to operate on the same routes as the original Asuka, traveling from Yokohama to various ports across Japan, the Japanese Islands, the Philippines, and on world cruises.
